Data Exchange Platform for the Horn of Africa (DEPHA)

keywords:
http://www.depha.org/

Judging by the web site only, DEPHA specialising in providing baseline maps and map data aimed at the larger NGOs since 2002. This is good for preparedness. It is possible for anyone to download maps or GIS layers to use in making their own maps. News is not available in RSS, and the site seems rather haphazard and shallow, but the idea and basic service offered is excellent.

The organisation also aims to promote the use of geographic data.

DesInventar

http://undp.desinventar.net

There is huge number and variety of disaster databases in the world. So many, and so incomparable.

La RED made a new approach to disaster databases. They wanted to address this problem, not only by making a standard, but by measuring the impact of disasters from below, at the local level, rather than on the basis of each event.

DesInventar is a database schema and software to support it, which has now been implemented in 21 disaster prone areas all over the world as far as they know.

OASIS

This software, Operational Activity Security Information System, created by IMMAP and funded by the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (PM/WRA), U.S. Department of State, tracks security situations online so as to facilitate the delivery of aid and movement of humanitarian personel.

It was released in 2006, but there doesn't seem to be much information on it.

Relief Emergency Mapping System

keywords:
http://www.gdin.org/proj_remaps.html

REMAPS was an early attempt at coordinating geographic information in an offline environment. The intention was to integrate with ReliefWeb to facilitate sharing of geographic data between agencies.

The US Government claims ownership of the project though several big players were also involved, including OCHA and GDIN
http://www.state.gov/www/issues/relief/field.html

Despite the big names being involved, history does not record what happened to this project. Ten years later, what was envisaged here is still not possible.
