MapAction
Established in 1997, this was a part time crack team of professional cartographers, but their reputaion and capacity is expanding steadily. Now the organisation has full time staff, an informative web site, runs training, and counts UN/OCHA UNOSAT, DFID, ECHO and Vodaphone amongst its partners.
Mapping experts are deployed both for for emergencies and seconded to other organisations for long term missions after a period of volunteering and training at home.
It's nice to see their maps easily accessible here, and interesting to note their preference for JPEG images over most other maps in the sector which are pdf vector images.
MapAction focuses purely on producing maps rather than on GIS work and other data collection. This ties in neatly with many humanitarian organisations who take the maps at face value and don't invest in spatial data analysis.
