This service is basically a Reuters portal with some other useful add-ons.
Country profiles and interactive maps show where the emergencies are happening and allow deep analysis of other factors using data from a range of sources, reminiscent of Gapminder.
There is also a W3 database, which indicates a surprising amount of NGO buy-in.
Analysis of media coverage is provided in a crisis / coverage comparison tools called the World Press Tracker. There are interactive tutorials for journalists explaining how the system works and suggesting angles for stories, a huge, searchable list of NGO jobs, and an news feed aggregated from a large number of NGOs, which can be filtered for the individual user.
Interesting is the division of emergencies into Conflicts, Food security, Health inc HIV, and Sudden disasters a clear attempt to get some of the slower, more chronic disasters up the agenda.
This is an excellent service from Reuters, providing much needed analysis as well as news.
